The Journey and Quest make up the Azamara brand of ships within the Royal Caribbean and Celebrity line. They are upscale, yet reasonably priced and geared towards the older, but active well-traveled passenger. They compete primarily with Oceana Cruises and both are billed as “deluxe” cruise lines. Azamara differentiates themselves with longer stays and more overnights to unique destinations as well as the more popular ones.

We recently sailed Azamara’s Journey to the western Caribbean. As we made our way through the very well organized and uncommonly relaxed embarkation process, we were greeted with smiles and Champaign and instantly noticed what makes these ships special.

It starts with ambiance like that of a boutique European hotel. The scale of the ship is intimate, you never wait long for an elevator, easily walk from bow to stern in just a few minutes, never get lost, yet there is plenty to see and do.

The service was exceptional. Although we didn’t avail ourselves to the Butler service that comes with some categories of cabins, the crew at large makes an effort to learn your name and talk with you throughout the cruise and even remembers your drinks and preferences. The ratio of crew members to passengers is very high relative to other cruise lines making the service efficient and personal. Even the Captain was always visible and very sociable and always stopped to say hi and could often be found eating lunch or dinner with passengers.

Many cruise lines compete via the quality of their food. We found the food on the Journey particularly delicious, varied and well prepared. The Main Dining Room Discoveries has open seating (sit anywhere, anytime and with anyone), but they will also seat you with others if you want. The good thing is that it is always “casual elegance” which is becoming increasingly popular and they stress NO tuxedos because there are no formal nights. For those intimate special occasions, they offer two specialty restaurants Prime C and Aqualina for a service fee of $15 per person. This charge is waived for passengers traveling in some categories of cabins. Prime C is a stake house and Aqualina offers Mediterranean fusion. We tried both of these and although the ambiance was good, the food took a little too long to arrive. In Prime C, the appetizers were creatively presented, but had some strange flavors.

One of our favorite amenities is that wine is provided with lunch and dinner in all dining venues. We were surprised at how good the wine selections were. They informed us that they are personally chosen from specialty regions by the cruise line President himself. Also, sodas, bottled waters and specialty coffees are provided throughout the ship at any time which not only removes the feeling of being nickeled and dimed, but also removes the inconvenience associated with drink stickers or having to sign for every little thing. The Windows Cafe in the back of the ship serves up a constant buffet with several theme nights throughout the cruise. Their Sushi night and Mediterranean night were particularly fun. Compared to other ships, we found it very refreshing not to have long lines even during peak meal time and we could always find a table. They also host several deck parties which were tastefully done and a lot of fun. The crew – including bridge officers – even took turns serving and grilling dinner for the passengers.

Although the Journey doesn’t have a large multi-storied theater or outdoor movie screens, the entertainment is still very good. They have a small cozy venue for their nightly shows including dancers, solo vocalists and instrumentalists rather than jugglers and comedians in a more cabaret style that is personable and enjoyable. The entertainers mingle with the passengers throughout the day which we found really helped make the shows more intimate and inclusive.

We stayed in an Ocean view cabin which was average size, but certainly adequate for two adults. The bathroom was a bit small and we had no bathtub. However, we had plenty of closet and counter space and the bed was comfortable. Each cabin has a refrigerator pre-stocked with complementary sodas and waters. They also provide self-service free laundry facilities.

The ship had a well-appointed spa complex, gym and fitness staff. We had no problem getting time on the treadmill even at peak times.

Overall, the onboard atmosphere is very relaxing and friendly; with a kind of country club feel. We kept commenting that it felt more like a large yacht than a cruise ship. Although the casino is a little small with only a few blackjack tables and only one roulette table, we still found it fun and a lively place to mingle and socialize. Although children are allowed, there are no onboard activities or kids clubs, so they are rare. In fact, our cruise had only two kids on board. One of the other attributes of the ship that we really liked was there were plenty of deck chairs, so we didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn on sea days just to reserve one like on other ships.

Back in the old days, cruise holidays were something of an enigma. Loved by the rich, famous, privileged and royalty, they were the only way to travel to see and be seen on. Enjoying something of a comeback – like many of our favourite celebrities – a cruise is now considered one of the best ways to travel. It’s the only mode of transport in which you can see many corners of the world without having to take planes, trains and automobiles. Is it any wonder stars love to travel this way too? The ultimate in comfort and experience, you could be rubbing shoulders with the stars.

Even if there is a lack of famous faces on your cruise, you can still holiday like a celebrity. The crew are there to make you feel as welcome and special as they possibly can – their hospitality is a big reason why cruises attract celebrities from the A listers to the Z listers. Old time rocker Rod Stewart is a fan, along with voice of the airwaves Sir Terry Wogan, Faulty Towers star John Cleese (minus Manuel) and even boy band member Duncan James from Blue.

Members of the Royal Family are fans too, including the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. Well known ladies flock to the on board spa facilities, where trained therapists are on hand to primp and prime to perfection. So if the holiday isn’t relaxing enough as it is, you can certainly relax even further.

All cruise and stay holidays will do the best to make every single person on board feel as special as a celebrity. This is a holiday unlike any other, where you can choose from a variety of restaurants and bars, be entertained, gamble the night away at the casino or simply enjoy being on holiday and relaxing in your cabin. The most star-studded night would be the formal night, where guests are invited to don their finest formal wear for the evening. Be sure to pack your sequins and DJ! The world-class restaurants will be enough for Hollywood’s finest plus the range of cocktails can rival even the coolest bars in London or New York – many cruises have a fine cocktail list so make sure you try one or two!

Other famous faces spotted on board cruises include Melvyn Bragg, Jane Seymour and David Frost; Robbie Coltrane, Liam Gallagher and the late Sir John Mills too. And queen of the chat show Oprah famously chartered a cruise in 2009 for her 1,700 employees and their families as a thank you bonus, where they travelled around the Mediterranean for ten days. Unfortunately, you can’t book a holiday on Oprah’s cruise but you can enjoy one of the many cruises on offer which would meet with her approval.

It’s time to think about a vacation.

But after looking at airfares, you have to put the kibosh on a European holiday. You don’t relish the idea of battling the crowds at a theme park. You don’t want to be cooped up for hours at a time on a long road trip. And you still have nightmares about last year’s camping trip when your tent got flooded by a thunderstorm.

So how about a cruise?

Cruise liners offer something for everyone. You get to visit exotic ports of call, and the idea of your hotel “traveling with you” is appealing.

But like any other type of vacation, you need to do a little planning before you embark upon your cruise of choice. Here are some helpful tips.

Map Out Your Trip

There are plenty of destination options to choose from when booking a cruise. Do you prefer the culture of Europe, the natural beauty of Alaska or the tropical island life of the Caribbean? You may consider selecting an off-season cruise for a given location to save some money.

document.write(‘(function () {try{VCM.media.render({sid:51426,media_id:6,media_type:8,version:”1.0″});} catch(e){}}());’ + ‘ipt>’);

You should also figure out how long you want your trip to be. Then check to see which cruise lines depart from ports near you. Also, look at the itinerary of each cruise. Some have several ports of call, while others only have a couple. If you want to spend most of the time on the vessel, different destinations might not be as important to you.

Think Before You Pack

Make sure to bring attire that is climate-appropriate. But you should realize that even warm-weather cruises can be chilly at night on the high seas, so don’t forget a light jacket or sweater. Be sure to pack sturdy walking shoes for land excursions as well as comfortable sandals for the ship. And don’t forget your swimsuit!

Many cruises put on a formal event during the trip, so be sure to include an evening gown or party dress and a tuxedo or suit. However, for most of the onboard venues including restaurants and theaters, casual attire is acceptable.

Prepare Your Wallet or Purse

In addition to your everyday picture identification, which is required for boarding, make sure to include your passport if your vessel is visiting foreign ports of call. If you forget your passport, you will be forced to stay on the ship when it docks in these locations.

Additionally, you might consider changing some money into foreign currency in advance of your vacation. This will eliminate the need to do so when you disembark in your foreign port. Many foreign locales do accept American money, but you should check with your cruise director just to make sure. In addition, you should probably leave superfluous cards, like gasoline, rewards and retailers’ credit cards, at home. You won’t need them during the cruise, and you don’t want to have to replace them if your wallet or purse is lost.

Do a Little Scheduling

There are plenty of events taking place on the ship, but they aren’t always going on all day. So take some time to peruse the schedule of events and port docking times. It’s understandable if you don’t want to create an hour-by-hour schedule of your entire cruise, but you don’t want to be caught having to make a decision between a fun activity on the ship or a shore excursion that you were looking forward to.

In most cases, you can set up shore excursions at the ports of call while you are booking your cruise. These are often once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for you to experience a new country or explore a unique culture. Many of these excursions are limited in terms of how many people they can accept (like with a nature safari in a bus), and the popular options will fill up quickly. So, if you wait until you get on board the ship to choose your excursion, it may be too late.

Take Some Precautions

When you are packing, be sure to include products such as Dramamine for motion sickness, sun block and aloe or other sunburn treatment. If you are going on a shore excursion into the wilderness, toss in some bug spray and anti-itch cream as well. These remedies, along with staples such as pain relief medicine, indigestion pills and bandages, are all sold on the ship – but they will be more expensive than similar items at stores on land.

Ferret Out the “Hidden” Charges

Speaking of expenses, read the fine print of your cruise itinerary to determine what extra charges you might be faced with. One of the major attractions of a cruise is that your room, meals, and onboard entertainment are paid for. But things like alcoholic beverages, carbonated sodas, casino gambling, laundry services, upscale dining and gift shop items will require additional payment. Here’s the good news: you can usually charge these expenses to your stateroom and pay for them at the end of your cruise.

Following these suggestions will help you increase the enjoyment of your cruise even more. Then once you walk aboard your luxurious cruise liner, all you have to think about is having fun!
